extremal method
prove that every polyhedron has two faces which share the same number of edges
extremal method and pigeon hole principle. let n be maximum number of edges on a face. every adjacent face must have between 3 and n edges. but there are n adjacent faces. by pigeonhole, some two must have the same number of edges.
